Warning about bug spray and your car’s paint

bug spray damages car automotive paint
WARNING: Deet destroys car paint! Lately mosquitoes are everywhere. Even in the shop, I'll get bit by mosquitoes - sometimes even through my shirt! And we've got the Zika virus to worry about, so I've been using bug spray probably twice a day. I keep a can at the shop for when I forget. And now for my confession. The other day, Tim finished painting some motorcycle parts and put them in the front room of the shop, to keep them safe from debris. Sigh. I later went in there and stupidly absent-mindedly sprayed on some bug spray, which ended up getting on the ...

Truck bed wood – Staining & Installing

truck bed wood in 66 chevy Asheville body shop
We got a very cool looking 1966 Chevy C-10 truck in for a new stained wood bed this week. Papa Noel owns this beautiful classic truck that is used for transporting and displaying Christmas trees from their various farms. Fun Fact: A Christmas tree from Papa Noel's farm was chosen to be the centerpiece in the White House in 2012. What an honor! They have tree farms all over, including some in the Blue Ridge Mountains here in the Asheville/ WNC area. This is what the bed of the 66 Chevy truck looked like when it came in. It had a steel bed that was actually ...

Trans Am Transformation!

TD Customs classic restoration
This 1970 Trans Am was originally a dark red/ maroon color with white accents, and has gotten painted back to the factory-original blue with white accents. The owner gave us a poster of the car with the paint scheme he wanted for inspiration. It's always nice when we get to see such a drastic difference in the paint jobs we do. Getting all the body work taken care of, and going from dark red to a true blue color has truly transformed the car. Here is what the TA looked like when it was first brought in. With this restoration, we stripped the paint off and ...

Avoid those car dents!

parking lot door dent
Car dents are very common and can happen so easily. They can come from people parking too close and opening their car door into yours, or from a number of other ways, like hail or a pebble getting kicked up. If you've ever returned to your car to suddenly find a new ding on the side of your vehicle, you know how frustrating it can be. Small car dents are easy to fix, but they still require body work and painting the entire panel it's on to make sure it looks seamless. Sometimes these small collision repairs are unavoidable. However, we can take certain precautions ...

The Helmet Halo

Helmet Halos at TD Customs
The Helmet Halo is a new portable motorcycle helmet holder that travels easily and protects your helmet from dents, scratches, and the possibility of theft. We had the pleasure of meeting Helmet Halo Owner and Asheville local, David Turner, a couple weeks ago. He brought a few Helmet Halos into the shop for us to display for our motorcycle enthusiasts. David designed the helmet halos after he cracked the mouth-piece vent on his helmet when it fell. It was a small, yet pricey replacement. Helmets are bound to take a fall here and there, so a helmet holder reduces the ...

Two-tone custom painted wheels

Custom painted wheels rims
Painted wheels give you the option of adding a pop of color or integrating a certain paint scheme throughout the details of the car. Painting wheels is an easy way to make them your own. Painting them to your liking may be preferable to purchasing new ones or keeping ones that don't go with the rest of the car. The painted wheels above were done for the '70 Trans Am restoration we've been working on. They are painted a two-toned color scheme; silver on a gunmetal metallic grey base. As you can see in the picture, the paint really gives them a little something ...

Getting a perfect color match

Matching and blending paint to bordering panels can sometimes be tricky, but it's an essential part in touching up small areas that need attention without having to repaint the entire car. This week we got a 1968 Camaro SS in that just needed a door repainted. The owner recently had another body shop in our area repair and paint the door, but the color match was not right. As you can see in the picture, the door is a darker color than the rest of the car. They didn't want to bring it back to the other shop, so they brought it to us. The paint code from the ...
