Chevy K-20 Pickup Truck Paint Job

The latest full paint job was done on a big 1986 Chevy K-20 pickup truck. It was to be painted back to it's factory-original colors; a brown and gold two-toned theme. The Before Pic... There was some body work needed before paint. All of the parts were taken off, including the bed, and sanded down and repaired. To prevent rust from popping up underneath the truck and on the bed, we undercoated it, and brush-coated a rust prevention coating called POR on the bed. The glass for the windows was also replaced, as was the rubbers for the windows and doors. After primer, the first areas to be painted were the back of the bed, that is pushed ...

Another family day with Ruthy!

Ruthy has been getting a lot of attention lately with family being in town for the holidays, and she is loving it! Last weekend, we had another family day at the shop as Tim's mom and stepdad were in town and ready to do some work on Grandma's car. The plan for the day was to continue with disassembly and start on floorpan repairs. Julie and Chris removed both of the front fenders and running boards. A couple screws gave us trouble, but nothing that can't be ground out. Gail removed upper and lower inner wheel wells and ground the rust off of them with an angle grinder. There was some rust in the floorpans, which needed to be cut out ...

Our customers keep in touch!

We got a nice visit from a wonderful customer of ours the other day. We've done a restoration on one of Pete's cars before; an Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. It was a complete ground up restoration, and one of the first that we did in this building. He's a great guy and a loyal customer, who's brought us a couple other cars and referred us to his friends and family. And every once in a while, he stops by just to say hi! He has a lot of cool cars, and likes to drive them all. This time, he brought the '29 Chevy. He remembered that we do a calendar every year with all the coolest cars we get in the shop, and requested we include the car in this year's ...

Ruthy is in the building!

We'd like to introduce you to Ruthy, a very special 1939 Chrysler Royal. This was Tim's grandmother, Pat's, very first car that she drove when she was 17 years old. It's been kept in a storage building in Upstate New York for the last 60 years! Over this past Thanksgiving weekend, the car was brought down from New York to TD Customs' shop in Mills River, where we will be giving it a full restoration, painting it back to the original dark blue, and getting her looking brand new again. You know there will be a lot of love put into the work done on this car, and what's really cool is that every aspect of the restoration will be done by ...

Land Rover Restoration: Complete!

The Land Rover restoration has been successfully completed and the customer was very happy! This is a '95 Land Rover Defender that has been stripped completely down, repainted a clean white color, and has gotten lots of new parts. This Land Rover restoration has been a complete, ground-up restoration. Since there was extensive work done on this this Land Rover restoration project, we've posted a few updates to cover all the different phases. There was a lot of parts to disassemble on this one, and body work to be done on some rust and dents and dings, which we wrote about here. From there it was primed and wet sanded, which we discussed in ...

Truck Restoration Update: Land Rover Defender, Part 2

We're making fast progress on the Land Rover Defender truck restoration! The body of the truck is in primer and has been completely wet sanded. All of the doors and the hood have been painted, so next up is painting the whole body. It will get painted tonight, so the paint can dry over the weekend. Next week, we are going to be putting it all back together. Assembly on the Defender is going to take a little longer than most truck restorations because there are so many different components. There is a roll cage, a soft top cover, new front and back seats, and lots of small pieces we took off to restore and paint. The exterior paint is ...

Full Paint Job, Done in Stages

One recent restoration project we've had is this 1965 Mustang, which will ultimately be getting a full paint job. We've been working with this customer for awhile. It was about two  years ago that he brought it in for body work and to get it put in primer. He explained that this was a project car and he was expecting the restoration, with both our work and the work he plans on doing himself, would take a few years to be completely finished. He didn't want an entire restoration done on the spot, but rather slowly work on it at the pace he feels comfortable with. Sometimes, it's easier for the customer if we break up the full paint job in ...

Keeping those classic restorations sparkling

The '56 Buick Special is a full classic restoration we did a little over a year ago, and today, it's back in the shop for a detailed wash and professional polish job. Our classic restorations leave the shop looking brand new and perfectly clean. But after driving around and taking it to car shows this summer, it could use some TLC to bring it back to that sparkling, just painted look. Auto restorations are a big investment into the life of a classic car, so it's important to maintain not only the engine, but the body and the paint job as well. Show car detailing helps to maintain the perfect shine and gloss on the paint. We've experimented ...

Classic Restoration: ’79 Corvette

We've got a couple classic restorations going on at TD Customs, including this 1979 L82 Chevy Corvette. This classic restoration started out bright green in color, affectionately known as "bugger green" by its owners, and just needed an updated look. The new paint color is going to be a custom mixed steel grey with blue undertones. It is going to look great! There were some body flaws, but after some sanding, fiberglass repairs and bondo work to fix the minor dents, it is going to be smooth and flawless. Tim is always bending down to look at the lines of the car to make sure there are no small waves, pin pricks or anything that needs to be ...

Back to work

It's back to work after enjoying a week off over the 4th of July holiday. We had a great week in upstate New York, visiting family and getting to spend some time at the lake. It's always hard to get back into the swing of things after a nice vacation, but it's good to be home. The shop is full and Tim is back to work. Next up is the full auto restoration on the Mazda truck. It's getting plenty of body work taken care of and a sparkling new paint job. Check back for more updates as we try to put more attention into the TD Customs blog!
