’64 Ford Galaxie Progress Report

ford galaxie restoration mills river body shop
We've got a 1964 Ford Galaxie in the building! As usual, we had Top Notch Towing, our preferred towing company, take care of the tow to our shop. The Galaxie is currently in the original red color, as you can see in the pictures, and will be painted back to its factory-original color from 1964, called Rangoon Red. The owners of this car actually live in Florida and frequently visit the WNC area often. They plan on making the car a family heirloom. We are always excited to be a part of a special family project like this. The first order of business in ...

1970 Plymouth Barracuda Restoration

We've got a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda in the house! The '70 Cuda is a pretty rare car that has been brought to us for a full body restoration. Top Notch Towing took care of the tow, and brought us the Cuda already on an automotive rotisserie. Having the car on a rotisserie is a perk, as it makes the refinishing process a little easier. We don't have to bend down or stretch to reach certain areas, and no laying on the ground. Not all cars need to be stripped down completely or will require this much attention to every inch. Before we got started with any of ...

A couple weeks ago, we rolled in the 1973 Corvette to get started on its restoration. This is going to be a full restoration, including refinishing and painting the body, as well as upgrading the motor and interior. New interior will be installed once the seats are reupholstered. Here is the Before... For this classic restoration, we are also helping with the motor and getting various upgrades done. The motor needed to be pulled out and taken to Mountain Machine and Performance shop for rebuilding. It's getting a complete overhaul and cam and valve train ...

‘A Family Classic’ ~ TD Customs featured in Hendersonville Times-News

TD Customs BlueRidgeNow - A Family Classic
By Jason Gilmer Times-News Correspondent For years, Tim Donaghue had wanted to wrangle a car away from his grandparents’ storage shed to restore. The owner of TD Customs in Mills River finally got the chance two years ago, when his family in Caledonia, N.Y., told him he could work on a family heirloom. There was one car in particular he wanted to return to its former glory — his grandmother’s first car, a dark blue 1939 Chrysler Royal. It was the car his grandmother learned how to drive in. The restoration, started in 2015, became a major undertaking ...

Classic 1940 Ford: Refinish & Paint

Classic restoration Asheville auto body shop - TD Customs
The 1940 Ford pickup truck is ready after body work and full paint. The truck came in with the same color scheme; light green with the dark green fenders and running boards. They are not the factory-original colors, but they look great and really compliment each other. All the parts come off the truck to be worked on and then painted. The fenders on these old classics are nice and rounded. When we do body work, we make sure the lines are nice and smooth, and that there are no blemishes. There is a lot of sanding and prep work that go into making sure each one of ...

Prepping #RuthysResto for Paint!

ruthys classic restoration
We have been busy working on our family restoration ~ a '39 Chrysler Royal named Ruthy. It is Tim's grandmother's first car, so when we have family in town, they are always eager to come in and help. Tim's mom, sister and step dad were a big help in getting the car wet-sanded and prepped for paint. There is a lot of prep work to do before we can paint a car. First, the body has to be perfectly smooth. Body work is done first. This entails applying bondo to the waves and indentations to the body of the car. The bondo allows us to sculpt the body back into its ...

Dustless Waterblasting

TD Customs paint body shop waterblasting
Dustless waterblasting is a way to strip a car of all the dust, paint and debris it has accumulated, and bring it down to bare metal again. Sandblasting isn't always the best option, as it can easily warp metal. However, dustless waterblasting is much gentler on these old classic cars. Here we have a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda that is getting a full body restoration. The body lines are wavy and will need a lot of body work to get them straight again. But first, we are stripping off old paint, some rust, and other debris. Once we get it down to bare metal, we can start ...

Camper Paint Job: El Burro

burro camper paint job
This must be the season for restoring campers, as this is the second one we've done in the last month. Spring is almost here, and it's time to get those campers looking nice for warm weather camping trips! Here is the Burro camper before... Not too bad, just needs refinishing to bring it back to that 'just like new' look. This travel trailer paint job was pretty straight forward. We needed to repair the cracks in the shell of the camper and get the body refinished back to its original condition. The old decals were looking a little worn, so we removed them and ...

Family day with Ms. Ruthy (’39 Chrysler)

We've had a family project in the shop this year, a 1939 Chrysler that belongs to Tim's grandma. It's almost ready to be painted, so we've had a few family days to get it all prepped. A lot of sanding and bodywork perfecting need to be done before we can see some color. Once the paint is on, you'll be able to see any blemishes. Therefore, we are always very thorough before rolling it in the paint booth. It's always fun to get together with family at the shop. Everyone gets something to do, even our 6 year old nephew! Julie and Ethan worked on sanding down the window ...

1967 Ford Mustang: Bodywork & Paint

td customs classic car paint body shop Asheville
The 1967 Ford Mustang has been painted, and looks great! The owner picked custom colors for the classic car. One is the Sonic blue pearl color we see on the main body. The other color is a grey/silver color for small accent pieces, such as all the trim and exterior pieces. When we last updated the blog, the Mustang's inner door jambs and underneath the hood and trunk had been painted, and the car was in primer. Here it is all put together and ready for fresh paint. There was body work needed all over the car, specifically on the hood, the roof and the trunk ...
